Puerto Varas
Puerto Varas is a beautiful resort town at the northern edge of Chilean Patagonia. It offers access to many great outdoor activities such as fishing, hiking, rafting, mountain climbing, etc. In addition, the city of Puerto Montt, from which a variety of cruises to the southern Chilean fjords depart, and the scenic Chiloe island are closeby. Mid-December is a very good time to visit: just at the beginning of peak season (December-February), generally ensuring good weather.
Getting There
By far, the most convenient way to get to Puerto Varas is to fly. In general, one must fly first through Santiago (SCL). Flights to Santiago from Europe and the US tend to arrive early in the morning (7-9am). From there, there are several flights each day to Puerto Montt (PMC) either with LAN or Sky Airlines. The non-stop flight from Santiago to Puerto Montt takes about 2 hours.
From Puerto Montt airport, it is a 30 minute drive to Puerto Varas in good weather. Please let us know your arrival date and time as indicated in the email to all participants; we plan to arrange for transportation from the airport to hotels in Puerto Varas. More information will follow in the next days. Avoid taking any "special offers" by local taxi drivers to bring you to Puerto Varas.
